An Innovation
Pipeline Powered
by Collaboration

Innovation happens when brilliant minds come together. That’s why we partner with industry leaders, startups, academic institutions, and internal innovators to co-create the future of care. With Providence’s reach and relentless focus on impact, we scale what works—so every patient benefits. Together, we are stronger.

Our Big Ideas
Transforming Care

Cardioscope

Preventing heart attacks before they strike.

DID YOU KNOW?

Approximately 805,000 Americans have a heart attack each year.

605,000 of those are first-time heart attacks.

Roughly half of all heart attack deaths occur within the first hour.

The Problem

Heart attacks are the #1 cause of death in the U.S., and many are preventable. Devices like defibrillators can save lives—but most sudden cardiac deaths happen in people with no known risk. If we can’t see a heart attack coming, we can’t stop it.

The Idea

What if we could spot who’s most at risk in the next few months? What if AI could flag high-risk patients that current models miss before they “slip through the cracks”?

The Solution

Cardioscope uses AI to scan ECGs routine heart tests for hidden patterns that signal heart attack risk within six months. The model has already proven it can predict sudden cardiac death using past data. Now, we’re testing it with real patients and learning how to embed it into everyday care. Once validated, Cardioscope could help stop heart attacks before they happen.

Trial Connect Project

Making clinical trials easier to find and to join.

DID YOU KNOW?

About 80% of trials face delays or closure due to recruitment problems. Furthermore, studies reveal that only a small percentage of eligible patients participate, with one widely cited statistic suggesting only 5%.

However, this 5% statistic is based on a specific subset of trials and patient populations and may not accurately reflect the full picture, especially given the various factors influencing a patient's decision to participate.

The Problem

Clinical trials can offer hope when standard treatments no longer work. But finding the right trial is hard. Patients and doctors often must search on their own, navigating confusing criteria and time-consuming systems—especially tough when someone is seriously ill.

The Idea

What if patients didn’t have to search? What if AI could match them to trials automatically? What if the health system took the lead in connecting people to life-saving studies just when they needed them?

The Solution

Trial Connect uses AI to read trial protocols and match them to patient medical records. It scans both in real time, finding opportunities and connecting eligible patients to the right trials. Instead of waiting for patients to ask, we bring trials to them—making access faster, simpler, and fairer for everyone.

POWER Project

Bringing precision cancer care to everyone.

DID YOU KNOW?

About 20,000 genes influence your health. 1 in 4 cancers run in families, and 1 in 10 are hereditary.

Yet fewer than 7% of patients get vital genetic testing—rates are even lower for underrepresentd groups.

The Problem

Advanced cancer treatments can now target tumors based on genetic markers—but access isn’t equal. Many patients can’t get the expensive genetic tests needed to qualify, and some providers lack tools to guide them through complex treatment pathways.

The Idea

What if we could use routine data—like standard pathology slides—to predict who needs advanced care? What if AI could identify which patients are likely to develop cancer or qualify for targeted therapies? And what if we could scale that across an entire health system, so even rural patients had equal access to the best care?

The Solution

Power Project’s AI tool, ProvGigaPath, analyzes high-resolution pathology images alongside patient data to uncover insights no human could see alone.

It helps answer key questions:
Prevention: Is this tissue likely to turn cancerous?
Treatment: Is the patient likely to qualify for targeted therapy?Response: Will they respond well to a specific treatment?

The Queue: Innovations in
Early Development

Digital Twins

The AI tools we are developing are bringing us closer to creating an individualized “digital twin” for patients. The tool will use AI to simulate treatment outcomes and help patients and doctors make informed decisions together about the next care steps.

Clinical Pathfinder

We are partnering to build and test a digital AI toolkit to support and inform doctors. The toolkit will learn what decisions other doctors made when they successfully treated patients in a similar clinical situation.

An Ethical Approach to AI Transformation

Patient Centered

Developing data-driven tools that deliver better health for all.

Assist Not Replace

AI tools should never replace expert discernment. Instead, they should support clinical decision making by helping doctors gather and curate the complex data they need to make the right call.

Shared Decision Making

An AI tool shouldn’t try to tell patients what to do. Instead, it should provide information about the options in ways that help doctors and patients decide together what to do.

We’re Committed.

We're committed to ethical AI, which means we use an approach that keeps patients, doctors, and their relationships at the center of healthcare operations.

AI has the potential to transform the future of healthcare, but it’s important we get it right. We support the full R&D life cycle to help take ideas from conception to large-scale reach and broad impact:

1

Develop

Collaborate with Providence experts to develop, test, and deploy new innovations at scale.

2

Test

Use our real-world, whole-person, multimodal data and AI models to inform discoveries and personalize care.

3

Scale for Impact

Transformational alliances that leverage capabilities across partners to drive meaningful impact.

Doing the Right Thing, the Right Way

The Innovation Institute is not just driving clinical innovation—we’re doing it with purpose. Every breakthrough we pursue is rooted in one goal: to improve care for every patient. Whether we’re advancing precision diagnostics or launching proactive care models, we share our findings openly—because progress only matters if it’s accessible.

Our work is grounded in our values: health equity, population health, and a commitment to a better world.
